Women building with AI

Women are building with AI. Let’s count them.

I'm building a list of women who are building with AI. Founders, trainers, marketers, analysts and makers. Tell me what you've built, and every Friday I'll help more people see it.

Why I’m fired up

Another report. Another headline about what women aren’t doing.

I’ve read them all, so you don’t have to. Here’s what the headlines say, what the numbers underneath actually show, and why I’ve had enough of the first story.

What the headlines say

25%

Women use generative AI at a 25% lower rate than men, across 18 studies and more than 140,000 people.

What the numbers underneath show

Read past the headline and the gap is in what women are given. Encouragement, credit, a microphone and a seat at the top.

of women have been encouraged by their manager to use AI. For men it’s 37%.

Nobody’s counting the women already building with AI. So I am.

The reports count who got trained, who got hired and who got quoted. None of them count the women already doing the work. So I’m building that list myself, one woman at a time, wherever you are in the world. Add your name and you count.

Where women are training women

The training is happening everywhere. Here’s where.

Women aren’t waiting for the workplace to teach them AI. All over the world, they’re teaching each other.

I’ve had enough. So I’m doing something about it.

Where this list started, and the 56 women I found in my own network.

1 / 9
Slide 1 of 9. Lisa Byrnes. Struck through: Women are falling behind on AI. I've had enough! So I'm doing something to change the narrative. Slide 2 of 9. 2010, Auckland. I hosted a dinner for women working in wine. A guest, the next morning: It wasn't a man's world last night. Slide 3 of 9. 2026, Auckland. Same feeling. Different industry. Every week I meet women building with AI. Slide 4 of 9. The gap is real. Women's share of US hires: 26% into AI roles, 50% into every other role. A 24-point gap. Slide 5 of 9. 56 women. One network. One afternoon. Nine of them named, and 47 more. Slide 6 of 9. The data counts job titles. A founder who runs her marketing through Claude. An advisor who teaches FMCG teams to use Copilot. None of them show up as AI jobs. Slide 7 of 9. 25 networks for women in AI, found in one afternoon. She Sharp, Women in AI, Women Build AI and more. Slide 8 of 9. Why I'm doing this. I'd rather celebrate what we are doing. We're stronger when we build each other up. Together. Slide 9 of 9. Tag her. Who's building with AI in your network? A gap in training is not a gap in knowledge.

My answer to the Harvard report on women and AI training, and where women are training each other.

1 / 8
Slide 1 of 8. Lisa Byrnes. Struck through: Women aren't getting AI training. So let's count what they're building. Women are training each other. Slide 2 of 8. The gap is real. No AI training at work: women 64%, men 49%. That's on employers. Harvard Kennedy School, October 2026, US adults. Slide 3 of 8. It counts one thing. The study counts employer training, US workers and who got taught. It misses women training each other, everything happening in NZ and who's doing the teaching. A gap in training is not a gap in knowledge. Slide 4 of 8. 4.3x. Men are quoted as AI experts 4.3 times more often than women in US news. If we only quote men, we only hear one story. Slide 5 of 8. Here in NZ, women are training women. She Sharp, The AI Assembly and Women in Data Science NZ. Slide 6 of 8. And around the world. Women in AI, AI-Powered Women, SheAI and many more networks. Slide 7 of 8. Put women on the stage. Speakers. Facilitators. Trainers. Panel chairs. Book them. Slide 8 of 8. Name her. Who should be speaking at the next AI event? Add your name at charismadigital.co.nz/women-building-with-ai.

Named on a Friday

Every Friday I name three women on LinkedIn, with what each of them built.

Every Friday
Lisa Byrnes on the Auckland waterfront

Who's behind this

I'm Lisa.

I run Charisma Digital in Auckland. I build the AI systems that run marketing for small businesses: strategy, systems, automation and content.

Before AI, I spent decades building websites, Shopify stores, strategies and campaigns by hand. That's how I know what good work looks like, and it's why I notice the women doing it well.

In 2010 I hosted the first Lovewine Professional dinner in Auckland, for women working in wine. The next morning a guest wrote, “It wasn’t a man’s world last night.” This list is me doing the same thing for women in AI. Making the women already doing the work easier to find.

Questions

The things people ask first.

Anything else, email me at lisa@charismadigital.co.nz

Do I need AI in my job title?

No. Most of the women I found don't have it. If AI is part of how you do your work, you belong on this list.

Do I have to be in New Zealand?

No. I'm in Auckland and plenty of the women in my network are here, but the list is open to women building with AI anywhere.

Will you post about me if I sign up?

Only in the way you choose: a Friday post, the list only, or neither. If you say yes to a post, I write it from what you’ve told me and tag you when it goes up. Want something changed? Tell me and I’ll fix it.

Could you name me if I haven’t signed up?

Yes. I also name women I already know are building with AI, using what they share publicly, like their LinkedIn profile. Rather not be named? Email lisa@charismadigital.co.nz and I won’t name you again.

Does this cost anything?

No. It's free, there's nothing to buy, and you don't need to sign up for my emails to join.

What happens to my details?

I use them for this list and the Friday posts, in the way you've said yes to. They aren't shared or sold.

How do I come off the list?

Email lisa@charismadigital.co.nz and I'll take you off. No questions, no forms.

Know a woman who should be on this list?

Send her this page, or tag her on my Friday posts and tell me what she built.
