A free practical guide for New Zealand small businesses. What it takes to show up when your customers ask AI, and why it is a foundation, structure and authority problem, not a content checklist.

Most advice reads like a to-do list. Add an FAQ page. Write a few blog posts. Claim your Google listing. It does not work, because these three things only work together. Miss one and the other two cannot carry it.
Can the AI reach and read you. The right crawlers allowed in, pages that load quickly, clean structure, and schema so an engine knows what each page actually is. If the crawler cannot get in, nothing else matters.
Is your answer easy to lift. Lead with the answer under a heading written as the question a customer would ask. Use their words. Answer what others dodge, including price. Then keep it current.
Does AI trust you enough to repeat you. Reviews, mentions, real expertise, and presence on Reddit, YouTube and LinkedIn. This is earned off your own website, which is exactly why most competitors have not built it.
Until this winter there was no solid New Zealand data on any of this. Now there is, and it says something more useful than the panic headlines.
IAB Australia and Pureprofile, Commerce and Discovery Report 2026. New Zealand base of 877 online shoppers aged 18 to 70.
On 7 May 2026, ChatGPT began putting links to brands inside its answers instead of tucking them away in footnotes. No announcement. Most people in New Zealand did not notice. For years the story was the no-click future. That story just changed.
Written for a business owner, not a search consultant. Every figure names its source, and the last page lists all of them with sample sizes and dates.
The shift that changed it. What ChatGPT did on 7 May 2026, and why it undid the no-click story.
The three layers. Foundation, structure and authority, and why they only work together.
The crawlers that actually matter. A reference table, and why the advice you have read is probably naming the wrong ones.
How to shape a page so AI lifts it. Question headings, answer first, price on the page, and keeping it current.
Where authority comes from. Reviews, Reddit, and why backlinks matter far less than you were told.
How to measure it. The new Google Analytics channel, the Search Console report, and what each one misses.
The New Zealand evidence. What Kiwi shoppers are actually doing, from research published this year.
Five things to do in the next month. In order, because three is wasted effort if one is broken.
What to watch from here. Including the Cloudflare change on 15 September that will catch a lot of small sites.
Every source, named. With sample sizes, dates, and an honest note on what still is not measured in New Zealand.
I'm Lisa Byrnes. I spent decades in publishing and media, from London to Bauer Media here in New Zealand, before going all in on AI marketing systems.
This guide is deliberately a starting point. I am not here to sell myself as the country's answer engine expert. I am here because most Kiwi small businesses have not done step one yet, and step one is not hard.
When I mapped the AI search discovery path for a Bay of Islands hospitality client, the work was not writing more content. It was foundation, structure and authority, built to hold together and to keep working.
Custom-built AI systems. Not bolted-on tools.
Work in three layers, in order. Foundation, so the AI crawlers can reach and read your site. Structure, so your answer is easy to lift, which means leading each page with the answer under a heading written as the question a customer would ask. Authority, so the engines trust you enough to repeat you, which is built through reviews, mentions and presence on the places AI reads, rather than on your own website.
Miss one layer and the other two cannot carry it. A perfect answer on a site the AI cannot reach is invisible. A reachable site with nothing worth quoting gets skipped.
The four that decide whether you can be cited are OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT, Claude-SearchBot for Claude, PerplexityBot for Perplexity and Googlebot for Google AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Most published advice names GPTBot and ClaudeBot instead, but those are training crawlers and allowing them does not make you citable. Google-Extended only governs Gemini and Google AI training, not AI Overviews.
One correction worth knowing. Cloudflare's 15 September 2026 change is widely reported as a blanket block on AI crawlers. It is not. From that date, new domains joining Cloudflare have bots classified as Training or Agent blocked by default on pages that display ads, while Search stays allowed. Existing domains are unchanged.
It builds on SEO rather than replacing it. Google's own guidance states that getting found in AI search is still SEO, working from the same foundations. Forrester reaches the same conclusion, that answer engine optimisation does not differ fundamentally from SEO.
The engines mostly read pages that already rank, so solid search foundations still do the work underneath. What changes is the shape of the content and where authority comes from. You will see it called AEO, GEO, AIO, LLMO and AISO. They are one thing under several names.
Yes, and there is now New Zealand evidence rather than guesswork. 55% of Kiwi online shoppers use AI tools at least sometimes when they shop, rising to 61% among 18 to 39 year olds, according to IAB research published in July 2026.
At the same time 93% still use a search engine or an online store to research a purchase. AI has been added on top of search in New Zealand rather than replacing it, so the businesses that show up in both win twice.
82% of New Zealand businesses now use AI, but almost none have built for AI search. Authority is slow to build, which means the ones who start now become the trusted name before the rest catch on.
It helps considerably. A clear readable price, even a starting figure or a range, is something an answer engine can quote with confidence. Most New Zealand competitors still hide their pricing, which means a published price is both a citation advantage and a differentiator.
The same applies to honest comparison pages. What your business costs and how it compares are the exact questions people put to AI before they buy.
Mostly off your own website. Brands are around 6.5 times more likely to be cited through someone else's site than through their own. Answer engines lean on Reddit, whose content is licensed to several AI companies, along with LinkedIn, YouTube and review platforms.
In New Zealand that means your Google Business Profile, NoCowboys, Trade Me feedback and whatever directory your trade actually uses.
Here is the part that should cheer up every small business. Backlinks, the old currency of SEO, show almost no correlation with AI citation. You do not need years of domain authority. You need to be quotable.
Book a free Foundation clarity call. I will look at where your business stands with AI search, and what your engine would need to do. No pitch. Just a clear picture.
Bring one thing with you. Open ChatGPT before the call and ask it what it says about your business. Whatever comes back, right or wrong, is where we start.
