Why I’m fired up
I’ve read them all, so you don’t have to. Here’s what the headlines say, what the numbers underneath actually show, and why I’ve had enough of the first story.
I’ve had enough.Women use generative AI at a 25% lower rate than men, across 18 studies and more than 140,000 people.
Used generative AI in the past year, US Federal Reserve survey, 2024
Harvard Business School, February 2025of women in the US say they’ve had no AI training at work, against 49% of men.
of US hires into AI roles in 2025 were women, against 50% of hires into every other role.
Read past the headline and the gap is in what women are given. Encouragement, credit, a microphone and a seat at the top.
of women have been encouraged by their manager to use AI. For men it’s 37%.
of women using AI at work have been praised for it, against 23% of men. And 29% worry they’ll be seen as cheating.
Men are quoted as AI experts 4.3 times more often than women, and named in AI headlines 14.6 times more often.
of C-suite AI leadership roles are held by women. The typical AI job advertises around US$177,000 a year.
Women’s use of generative AI tripled in a single year, from 11% to 33%. Men’s grew 2.2 times.
of AI engineering talent are women, up from 23.5% in 2018. The gap narrowed in 74 of 75 countries.
The reports count who got trained, who got hired and who got quoted. None of them count the women already doing the work. So I’m building that list myself, one woman at a time, wherever you are in the world. Add your name and you count.
Most of these studies measure women in the US. The pattern is the same wherever I look.
Where women are training women
Women aren’t waiting for the workplace to teach them AI. All over the world, they’re teaching each other.

Building [what you told me, in your words]. Tag her and say hello.
You go on my running list of women building with AI. It helps me show the real number, and it stays private.
You're not named and you're not on the list. I'll keep you posted when there's something worth your time, like a roll call or a meet-up.

Read by meEvery Friday I name three women on LinkedIn, with what each of them built.
Every FridayWho's behind this
I run Charisma Digital in Auckland. I build the AI systems that run marketing for small businesses: strategy, systems, automation and content.
Before AI, I spent decades building websites, Shopify stores, strategies and campaigns by hand. That's how I know what good work looks like, and it's why I notice the women doing it well.
In 2010 I hosted the first Lovewine Professional dinner in Auckland, for women working in wine. The next morning a guest wrote, “It wasn’t a man’s world last night.” This list is me doing the same thing for women in AI. Making the women already doing the work easier to find.
See what I buildNo. Most of the women I found don't have it. If AI is part of how you do your work, you belong on this list.
No. I'm in Auckland and plenty of the women in my network are here, but the list is open to women building with AI anywhere.
Only in the way you choose: a Friday post, the list only, or neither. If you say yes to a post, I write it from what you’ve told me and tag you when it goes up. Want something changed? Tell me and I’ll fix it.
Yes. I also name women I already know are building with AI, using what they share publicly, like their LinkedIn profile. Rather not be named? Email lisa@charismadigital.co.nz and I won’t name you again.
No. It's free, there's nothing to buy, and you don't need to sign up for my emails to join.
I use them for this list and the Friday posts, in the way you've said yes to. They aren't shared or sold.
Email lisa@charismadigital.co.nz and I'll take you off. No questions, no forms.
Send her this page, or tag her on my Friday posts and tell me what she built.
